Camera As Weapon, 2023

Softcover brochure, 40 pages, Edition of 5
Supervised by Claus Gunti
Graphic design by Laura Csocsan

Each photograph documents not only the actions of the photographer, but also the encounter between the photographer and the person photographed. The resulting image is a product of both parties, and no photographer can claim to own the photograph completely. Every photograph bears the traces of this encounter, as Ariella Azoulay writes in her publication „The Civil Contract of Photography“. And Susan Sontag states: “The ultimate wisdom of the photographic image is to say: There is the surface. Now think – what is beyond it, what the reality must be like if it looks this way.”

In “Camera As Weapon – Violence In And With Photography”, I explored the various forms of violence within the photographic medium, as well as the use of the camera as a defense mechanism and tool for trauma recovery. In particular, I worked out the difference between images that show violence and images that were taken with violent intentions.
