In the 9-metre-long assemblage Gardinenstück, Gina Bolle critically examines the power of visual image culture.
Images have the power to create realities and spread ideologies. Bolle researched and collected historical and contemporary image sources in libraries and on the internet, including propaganda photography and meme culture, which do not directly show violence but are used for manipulation. She printed these images out and transferred them using acetone onto curtain fabric, which normally protects from an intrusive gaze. In the next step, she pasted and painted over these images to disempower them and added her own photographs as well as images from queer pop culture that serve self-empowerment, creating an assemblage that questions the manipulative power of images and is intended to encourage a critical examination of the media and its intentions, especially in the age of artificial intelligence.
