Serve The Cycle is a collaborative two-channel video work that investigates the complex relationship between the body, self-perception, and society’s expectations, as mediated by the pervasive gaze in social media. For this collaboration, visual artists
Gina Bolle (Marburg/Berlin) and Amandine Kuhlmann (Paris) use found footage from digital platforms and performance to address how digital and public spaces both constrain and empower female identities.
The piece unfolds in three chapters: “The Urge to Be Seen, The Realization I’m Just a Projection, The Need to Be Forgotten”. Each chapter responds to the repetitive, almost cyclical dynamics women face in online spaces — the desire for visibility, the awareness of being an object of projection, and the simultaneous desire to escape the public eye. The project satirical-
ly reflects on how these dynamics, driven by social media and meme culture, contribute to the ongoing cycle of performance, consumption, and self-representation.
The two artists’ collaboration highlights a shared cultural history, rooted in the visual manipulation of female bodies and the ongoing negotiation of public versus private life in the digital age. It poses a radical questioning of the power dynamics that continue to govern women’s bodies, identities, and visibility.
Serve The Cycle is supported by the Franco-German Citizens’ Fund, which promotes cultural and collaborative exchanges between France and Germany. The artists’ work began through virtual meetings and culminated in their in-person collaboration in Berlin and Marburg. The screening in Paris represents the next phase of this cross-cultural dialogue, illustrating the shared concerns and creative expressions of both artists.
