In the works on display, Gina Bolle uses acetone to transfer photographs from laser prints onto paper. During this process, the images fragment, dissolve, and leave behind blurred, porous, and sometimes broken surfaces. The visible instability of the material reflects the uncertainty of the images themselves.
The works combine two types of photographs: private images from the family archive and portraits of celebrities sourced online. The archive photographs, originally intended as a critique of the consumption of beauty products, shift attention from what is shown to the intentions behind the act of photographing. In both series, the images reveal how observation, exposure, and judgment can shape our perception — and how the private sphere has been and will always be political.
The exhibition title AT LEAST IM SAFE IN MY MIND., borrowed from an internet meme, points to a fragile form of refuge — a space where one’s thoughts and inner self can remain protected, even as images and appearances are increasingly exposed to public scrutiny and online aggression.

In 2010, German magazine Neon published a fictive interview with Beyoncé, opening with this image and a question about the price of butter. The management found out, and the responsible editor was dismissed without notice.

The young Kate Moss in the iconic sheer dress. The image comes from an online search for images that were taken and/or used with intention. Information about the image is taken from an interview with Kate Moss: “I didn’t realise this dress was see-through until the picture appeared in the newspaper the next day. It was the flash that made it look see-through. ... I didn’t realise it was so see-through.”

Two photographs taken by the father during a family holiday in 2005 serve as the starting point of the series. Capturing beauty products in a hotel room, the images were intended as “evidence” to criticise the women’s use of cosmetics. For Gina Bolle, they shift the focus from what is shown in the photograph to the intention behind the act of photographing. The work reflects on personal, social, and cultural dimensions of patriarchal structures and female identity, reminding us to question the subtle undercurrents of images, memories, and normative influence on the self.

Kourtney Kardashian poses pregnant on a bed. The 40-something-year-old is heavily criticised online for being too old to get pregnant, and images of her are used to fuel this criticism. The work addresses ageism - discrimination based on a person’s age, which often affects middle-aged women in particular.
