The multimedia installation Crimes of Carelessness explores collective memory and the historiography of Villa Heike in the immediate vicinity of the Hohenschönhausen memorial using video, sound, light, text and sculpture.
At the invitation of Villa Heike by Michael Schäfer, Moritz Jekat initiated a temporary collective of six artists in the summer of 2024. Under the name Eternal Knitting, they explored the overlaps between personal and collective memory – how do individual and collective experiences influence each other? At what points are they permeated by power structures? To what extent is it possible to speak and speculate about collective memory beyond these power structures?
In this joint ‘knitting’, the approaches of the six artists met and intermingled. In keeping with this approach, the exhibition deliberately dispenses with individual positions. The interplay of inside and outside, of public and private, is a central motif. The large windows show a diorama for passers-by, including those travelling in coaches to visit the memorial. The exhibition space itself becomes an ‘outdoor scenography’ that brings together historical traces, props and speculation.
