Steel, wooden panels, aluminium mesh, acoustic foam, five 27″ screens, iMac Mini, three Raspberry Pi cameras V3 NoIR, loudspeaker, magnetic sensor, Arduino controller, two infrared light panels, two surveillance cameras
Based on Foucault’s „dispositif“ theory, the interactive audio-video installation „Instanz“ embodies a system that consciously exercises power and control over an individual. It understands the photographic apparatus as a tool that is used with a determined intention.
„Instanz“ consists of a steel construction with five screens and three hidden infrared cameras inside, as well as two external surveillance cameras. The appearance is inspired by the aesthetics of soundproof walls, while the interior is built as a dark, soundproof and therefore isolated space.
As soon as the door is closed, the sound of bells, distorted recordings of previous performances and an asthma-like background noise are heard. Visitors are confronted with an unexpected sequence of live broadcasts of their own surveillance footage, lighting effects and immersive sound recordings.
Similar to a „panopticon“, visitors have no control over whether and when they are being watched: Three hidden cameras are strategically placed. One directly above the visitors‘ heads, inspired by “downblousing”, one in a voyeuristic view from below, inspired by “upskirting”, and one in a side view.
